Question by ♫J.M.♪: Do you think music is a universal language?
Some people say music is the universal language that all people on this planet can understand. Some say mathematics. I personally think pictures should be added to the group of universal languages because no matter what country you come from, you can still understand what is going on in a picture. What do you think?

Of course it is. I was in my high school marching band. An orchestra from a high school in Japan came to visit us. Kids got to stay with us and experience our culture. We couldn’t really communicate with them. The second day after they arrived, we all came to school and sat in our band room. Our conductor passed out a piece of music we had never seen. We all picked up our instruments, and played beautifully. It was awesome how we knew what we were reading. It wasn’t americans and Japanese, We were clarinets and flutes and trumpets. I loved it.

there are many forms of universal language, most of which you’ve already listed. but music is most definitely one of the most powerful of them all. i imagine things like pictures or mathematics would easily be understood similarly by any human from any part of the world, but music is something you feel, it makes your body tingle and invokes potent euphoria within us all. i don’t speak any italian, for example, but when me and my friend kyle went to lecce a few years ago to perform at this street festival, we made friends with a lot of the italian dudes playing music through music, because we communicated by playing in sync with each other. i was mixing drumnbass on my laptop, kyle was projecting visuals on the wall of this cathedral, and these other guys were playing live instruments, and even though we didn’t speak italian, we bonded that night, we came to understand each other and learned a lot about each others’ personalities through the melodies and ideas we added to the overall mix.

i’m convinced that music is, by FAR, the most magnificent discovery that humans have or will EVER make. but i’m a complete sound junkie so that might not be true for everyone.

Music is a language we all enjoy, but we tend to make divisions in music also. Different races, nationalities, and age groups tend to listen to different types of music. A group actually complains about the music of other groups. Some individuals are more social and do enjoy listening to all forms of music. In any event music as a logical progression of sound is pleasing to the mind which seeks order.

The same can be said for pictures. Pictures convey the different attitudes in different cultures and as such the meanings can be controversial among groups.

Mathematics is universal in it gives objective information, however it is can be totally lacking in personal sentiment.

When all people allow love, courage and sound logic to flow from their hearts, then there will be an universal language.

Yes, although I don’t think you’ll find many native Watutsi listening to Madonna.

Yes it is. Music links us all together. There is at least one song in this world that every single person knows. We become friends with people who share our taste in music, etc. Everyone can understand music.
