Question by Jonathan: What are some good computer programs for composing music?
Hi,

In Music Theory Class, we are composing music. We are currently using Sibelius 5 to compose our music. I’m new to song composing, and I would want to do this outside of class. I looked on the internet, and Sibelius 5 is $ 300. As a beginner, I do not want to spend that money.

What are some good programs for new composers? I would want to spend up to a maximum of $ 100. Thanks for your help,

Jonathan

I haven’t ever used advanced music programs.I use an online website called noteflight where you can compose your own music. There is a free version and a paid version. The paid gives more insturments and other notation options, although there is an ample amount provided in the free version. If you’re composing for fun this site would be ideal. Try it out and see how it is.

The two best programs seem to be Finale and Sibelius.
Each program has its pro’s and con’s.

I use finale notepad. It works for me better than others I have tried. I haven’t yet upgraded to printmusic but you can print with notepad.

Musescore is a free composing program and does just about everything Sibelius 5 does. I’ve been using it for about a year and it is a great free composing program for those who don’t want to fork out hundreds of dollars.

    Final
    Sibelius

… both are available with educational discounts
… both have “student” version available with fewer options.
