Pet Sounds is the best Beach Boys album ever, but it was really Brian’s
baby with the Boys practically guesting. Sunflower on the other hand, is
the best Beach Boys album as a band, all six involved in producing and
writing the music. A spectacular LP.

For me, ‘Sunflower’ was a letdown compared to the late sixties Beach Boy
releases, which were, by and large, strong. There were a few bright moments
on it, but ‘This Whole World’ certainly wasn’t one of them. ‘I Went To
Sleep’ … there’s a song with genius chord changes and melody, not to
    mention the harmonies.

‘This Whole World’ is one of the most astounding Beach Boys songs ever and
the shifting of keys is another example of Brian’s compositional genius.
When a lot of people say that Brian didn’t add much to the post-Smile
collapse BBs music, I just roll my eyes and crank this spectacular song.

I love Pet Sounds, & Smile, and really all of the late sixties stuff they
did. But my personal favorite will always be Sunflower.
