Question by TH3 S1CKN355: Can someone give me the basic major guitar scale (3 notes per string) and the “C.A.G.E.D” fingering?
I’ve been burning through the random assortments of guitar scales online because I am an aspiring musician and I am looking to sharpen my guitar skills and/or expand… However, it seems everyone has a different idea as to how the basic Ionian (Major) scale is fingered in 3 notes per string. It’s very frusterating. Also, no one tells which frets are being used so its getting me virtually no where. If anything, I fear I am confusing myself. HELP!!!

I have not heard of a “C.A.G.E.D” fingering. However, asking how to do a 3-note-per-string major scale depends on which string you intend to start on. SO….

eg.
C Major Scale
Standard 6 string Tuning.

This will start on the 8th fret of the low E string.

E——————————————————————————–10–12–13——–
B—————————————————————-10–12–13————————
G————————————————–9–10–12—————————————-
D———————————–9–10–12——————————————————-

A——————-8–10–12———————————————————————–
E—-8–10–12————————————————————————————–

You can play this pattern, starting on any fret on the low E string.

Here’s a 3 note-per-string shape for the major scale. This is C major from the root.

Here is a nice website about the CAGE method. It’s short, but has a lot more information than some other wordier tutorials.
