Is it possible to sign a record deal as a “group act” than sign another deal (from a different record label) as a “solo act”

Possible, yes. Likely, most definitely no.

Record labels are very careful about making sure they get every penny they possibly can from every act. A “360″ deal is the norm these days. “360″ being a reference to the all-encompassing nature of the contract, designed to make sure that the label not only gets every possible royalty from every possible source, from music to merchandise to ringtones, but also prevents the artist from getting out of the contract early or singing any sort of competing deal.
