Not a household name among US songwriters of the 60′s this collection demonstrates the diversity in music & styles that Taylor brought to the table. There is a soulful thread to many of these accessible pop songs that makes it a most enjoyable set. ‘Wild Thing’ is the most famous composition but, although distinctive, in my view is one of the weaker cuts & certainly atypical of the work represented here.

I found Chips Taylor’s story to be interesting. I didn’t know his brother was Academy Award winnner Jon Voight and Angelina Jolie is his niece. Chips was accomplished in his own right. He wrote songs, very good songs like Wild Thing and Angel Of the Morning that are still played on radio today. Chips was a master songwriter able to create songs that crossed genres and appeal to all kinds of tastes. This retrospective from ACE features rock songs, blue eyed soul, country, folk songs – all written by Taylor alone and with others. Highlights- a sexy Peggy Lee recording of Sneakin’ Up On You, Tina Mason’s version of Any Way That You Want Me, which was recorded by Evie Sands, Welcome Home by Walter Jackson and the original demo of Storybook Children by Billy Vera and Nona Hendrix. However, when Storybook Children was released as a single, Hendrix had been replaced by Judy Clay.
