They are just as right today as they were in 1975, February 21, 2014

Yep, I’ve been BUYING these since 1975, and have used them on virtually every acoustic guitar I’ve ever owned (or borrowed) to the great improvement of the guitar. They are just as good now as they were then. A finer string is yet to be made.

I admit I was swayed by all the advertising for the new SP strings or the Elixirs, D’Addario, DR, and even Dean Markley, which were all fun (enjoying the small change of a new string) when I first put them on but they never got that piano like clarity that these get once lightly played (read broken in). Oh sure, they’re all nicer to your finger tips… but at the sacrifice of tone. So every time I’ve come home to the Martin Marquis string and it’s been like coming home for Christmas; it really doesn’t get any better than this. You pluck the string and it makes this huge wood & brass sound. Yum. If you have a really good guitar you’re going to hear it end to end.

And yeah, I know it’s the same as the traditional string but with the silk wrapped on the end of the wire, to protect your bridge. But I’ve come to believe that the silk also does something to the bridge pins, as they do sound ever so slightly mellower, perhaps rounder. The Marquis string works great with ebony pins (which some folks might consider too edgy).

You’d a thunk somebody would’ve bested this old plow horse by now – and she was an old timer the first time I bought a set in ’75! But they stand tall as the very yardstick of acoustic guitar tone.

I bought one of these sets, and I have to say, they’re pretty good. They have a nice ring, and they’re very bright. Not as bright as John Pearse, Ernie Ball, Elixir, etc., but still very very very bright. Sadly I didn’t know the price here on Amazon was about $5 cheaper than the music store I got them from (they were $9, still good and about 40% off the retail price). If you’re a beginner or someone looking for good strings that are cheap, I HIGHLY recommend these.

As a practicing musician, I need great sounding strings at a reasonable price. I change my strings about every other gig. Martin Marquis consistently sound great and, having wrapped ends, are easier on my valued acoustic guitar’s saddle. If you are playing often, I highly recommend these strings!

I purchased these hoping that they would work in an old 1947 Kay acoustic guitar and they fit perfectly, and they look great and they work just fine.

They aren’t as good as brass or bone, but they’re good and cheap replacements in a pinch. Not too bad.
