Most musicians (since they aren’t signed to record labels) sell their MP3s/CDs/shirts/stickers/etc. without the help of corporations. You can do this quite easily… there are sites that allow you to build your own store, sell directly to fans, and keep more of your profits.
One example is: http://www.myfavoriteband.com.
You can upload and sell MP3s along with CDs, shirts, and any other merch that you already have. It’s free to set up your store, you can post an unlimited number of items, and the site doesn’t profit from your sales. The only money taken out of your sales is to cover PayPal’s minimal transaction fees (about 2.9% + 30 cents) for the sale. This method is better than iTunes and other large distribution companies, because they take a huge chunk of your profits.

There is an abundance of potential marketing campaigns/business models that are suitable to explore when getting started in the industry. I found one of my best references with countless valuable contacts, from nearly every faucet of the industry. Here’s a link to the book. Good luckhttp://www.amazon.com/2009-Musicians-Atl…
