Difference is in a lot of area. The Majors have the capital to market and promote as well in the production stage. How do you think they get average singers like Britney and like to sound good? Indie labels do it for the true love of music. They may not have the best production but bands love the labels heart and risk taking for giving them a chance. most good bands start with Indie labels and move on up (see Arcade Fire, modest mouse, the Shins) Also Majors look for the sure thing and have no qualms signing the “one hit wonders” because they can handle the hit. Major labels hold a lot of responsibility for the state of music in America which is sad, they only care about the bottom line which is MONEY not music.

Major is the big name record labels such as a rockafella, and indie (independent) is something more like fueled by ramen. One isn’t neccesarily better than the other…it depends on the type of music you prefer. Major labels have more money for editing, but beauty is in the eye of the beholder.
